Synopsis[]
Fran decides to share an apartment with Val when she feels stressed out.
Plot[]
Feeling that taking care of the kids has taken over her life and eliminated her personal life, Fran thinks about moving out of the mansion. But she receives the real push from Mr. Sheffield who assures her she can't do it. So Fran and Val rent a small garden-level apartment together in a building full of gay men. Fran misses the mansion but doesn't want to give Mr. Sheffield the pleasure of being right. What she doesn't know is that he also longs for her to return. Trivia[]
- The line which Fran and Val sing, and partly don't know, is the opening the theme song from Laverne & Shirley, which was also about two single girls who shared the same apartment. David L. Lander, who played the landlord of the building where Val and Fran were living, had a role on Laverne & Shirley as Squiggy.
- The landlord played by Lander states that his male lover, and the building's other landlord, is named "Leonard," which was likely a reference to Squiggy's best friend on Laverne & Shirley Lenny. However, unlike Lenny and Squiggy when they were on Laverne & Shirley, it is made clear that the landlord and boyfriend of 17 years are gay. It is not made clear if the landlord, whose name was not mentioned, is Lander's Laverne & Shirley character, or if the name of his boyfriend was merely a nod to Lander and Michael McKean's previous Laverne & Shirley roles. However, Laverne & Shirley was also set in the late 1950s to the mid 1960s during its run, which was many years before the time Lander's landlord character claimed he and "Leonard" became lovers, with the time space between the mid 1960s and 1978-when the landlord and "Leonard" became lovers- also constituting more than enough time for a person's sexual orientation preference to change; a person's sexual orientation preference is acknowledged to at times change with age.[1] McKean, who played Lenny on Laverne & Shirley, guest starred on The Nanny before "Val's Apartment" aired in Franny and the Professor.
- When Fran opened the door of the apartment to hear a song in the hallway, "The Trolley Song" is heard, which confirmed that the men in the apartment are all gay, which upset Val's belief there would be a few straight men here.
