"The Tart with Heart" is the first episode in the fourth season of the CBS sitcom The Nanny. It aired on September 18, 1996.
Synopsis[]
Fran decides to date a blind man after she is convinced by C.C. that men admire her only for her looks.
Plot[]
After a cliffhanger at the end of Season 3, Fran and Mr. Sheffield's flight safely lands back in New York City. Before they return home, Mr. Sheffield awkwardly takes back telling Fran he loved her, offending Fran. C.C. tells Fran that she only got the nanny job because of her looks. Niles struggles to find out "the thing" that happened between Mr. Sheffield and Fran, though neither will say what occurred.
Mr. Sheffield tries to find ways to apologize to Fran for hurting her feelings, but only makes it worse by telling her he thought she was "drop-dead gorgeous" when he first met her. Heartbroken, Fran and Val go out to a bar where they meet a man named Jack. Fran complains that men only want her for her looks, but Jack reveals he is blind, reassuring Fran that she is more than just a pretty face. Jack and Fran start dating, but he calls Fran out for being obviously hung up on Mr. Sheffield and using him to prove a point. Fran throws a tennis ball into the street and Jack's guide dog chases after it, pulling Jack into traffic.
After Jack breaks up with her, Fran complains to her mother about her love life and how Mr. Sheffield doesn't respect her. Sylvia advises her that it isn't a matter of respect, but that it is a problem with Mr. Sheffield himself: he is hung up on his wife and worried about his children. Returning home, Fran and Mr. Sheffield talk about what happened and Mr. Sheffield confesses that while he cares deeply about her, he's scared that pursuing a relationship could ruin what they have. They agree to remain friends, though they can't restrain themselves from sharing a more-than-friendly kiss.
